The weight is within standards. How circulated is it? A photo would be useful. 1983 was a transitional year, different compositions. Bronze for example, very pricey.

@Tkriley13, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes pics could be useful. Here is a link to the tutorial for posting pics:

Thought 82 was the transitional year. Yes bronze may be pricey, that is why the US mint didn't use it for their Lincoln cents. Bronze is a copper alloy with around 12% tin. Copper Lincoln cents are 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc.

It is within standards for a copper cent, not a plated zinc one. It's .3 grams out of tolerance too heavy for copper plated zinc.

Double check your scale. Test it with some known copper and plated zinc cents to make sure it is reporting correct weights on those. If it does give correct weight son those but still shows this cent as 2.9 then we need to move to the next step, getting a specific gravity test done

Yes I checked it with a lot of pennies and they all weigh either 2.4-2.7, and then 2.9-3.1, but this one stinkin 1983 weighs 2.9... that is why I'm so confused and I have seen that it could be the wrong planchet if it is the 3.1 planchet... so where do I go from here? How else can I test it? Thanks I appreciate all of your knowledge and help! You guys are great!
