68S Jefferson- damaged or a possible second S or "something" underneath and or on top of the first S?

chuckster, first off, your coin is so badly damaged that even if it was a RPM it would have no value. Unless it's one of the more famous doubled dies I try to keep my oddities to EF or better. Not trying to put you down, just a tip on finding something of value. Here is a picture of a 68 already starting to fill between the arcs of the S. now imagine this beat around for 40 years and it would like just like yours.

For you guys that are going to jump on me for not knowing the difference between a nickel and cent, it was the only S mint coin in front of me.

MorgansRmine:

No offense taken- "I post them as I find them" - for future educational purposes besides any possible premium values etc.

Appreciate your opinion.

That being said, I revert back to my original question.

Is this a RPM or is it strickly a damaged mint-mark?

Thanks,

Chuck.

I'm thinking strictly damage myself. The last two pics show how much the numbers have flattened also. I think what looks like fill in the bottom of the S loop is merely metal that has been pushed/moved from a serious hit.

Besides the damage another thing is affecting your coin. Extreme die wear. On the West side of the S that should be blank, the die is deteriorating and slowly flows the field and device into each other. The nickel dies are affected because the Nickel added to the copper that makes them. (25% Nickel 75% Copper) The dies wear faster and are used too long after the little devices start wearing.
