Hi,

Absolutely....It was someone playing with a self engraving tool. Could be a dremel tool or another type of engraving tool. You can get them at hardware stores or places like Sears. Many people engrave identifying marks on tools or on bicycle frames. Years ago when I was in security, we would train people to open up their electronic equipment and engrave an identifying mark on the inside of the cover.

That helped in identification of an item in the event of a theft.

Thats what was most likely done to this coin.
