If they were genuine gold sovereigns, they would not have that behind GV's head. Can you post a closeup of what, if anything, that says as well as the weight?

Fancy box means nothing. Looks to be a copy, probably originating in Lebanon, made in reasonably good quality gold. Should weigh a very tiny bit less than 8 grams, and should be exactly same diameter and thickness as genuine. If it doesn't, then it ain't any more than gold plated. Surprisingly, they actually traded, because the originals were so respected.
The British Government however, was not happy to see the international reputation of the British Sovereign compromised in any way. The answer was to flood the market with millions of genuine sovereigns, all dated 1925, which achieved the intended purpose of driving the copies out of circulation.

All coin collectors should leave notes with their collection so that their heirs know what they are getting.

I have seen those before. That is the word "Copy" that someone has tried to remove.

I'm an OFEC (One From Every Century? Culture? Country?) My numismatic learning curve is still steep, after more than 40 years of serious collecting. That is why I need the specialists. I find them here in the CCF.

Looks like it says M22M behind the head. Perhaps 22k gold jewellers copy from the middle east?

It is a "jeweller's copy" of a sovereign. The mark is not a defaced word "Copy". It's the fineness mark, and tells us that this is a copy from Dubai.
In Dubai, it is perfectly legal to sell fake sovereigns, so long as they are (a) made of actual gold, and (b) the actual gold fineness is marked or stamped on them. This mark says "M22M", with the "22" in Arabic numerals so they look more like "77" only backwards. "22" is the fineness mark in carats, "MM" is presumably the monogram of the gold-seller who made it. We've seen "M22M" stamped on replica sovereigns here on the forum before, so this seller must be one of the bigger, more popular ones with tourists in Dubai.
The Dubai use replicas of well-known gold coins like sovereigns to help move their stock of gold. Their profits are usually covered by selling their replicas at the standard price of a sovereign, only making them either from slightly more dilute gold (At 22k, this coin is okay in that regard) or of slightly lighter weight.
