I have a 2017 Proof Set with the penny split on either side (the zinc shows through and the die is split). I was hoping that since it was in a proof set it would have some extra value, but seeing the issues above and the fact that the lens is easily tampered with, I guess that there is no extra value to the set.

Any thoughts?

to the Community! Without seeing closeups of the area affected it almost sounds like it has a split plating problem.

Looks more like the coin is damaged. It is still a proof cent, but impaired now. If the die was split, then the area would be raised and not incuse and showing the zinc. PSD

To CCF! Split Plate Doubling is probably most likely. This doesn't increase any value. http://www.error-ref.com/split-plate-doubling/

I actually bought 2 of the 2017 S proof sets at the same time and both had the same issue with the pennies in the same place
