Hello folks, I can't find any info on this, in price guides and would appreciate your thoughts, on what it might be made of and value?

It was a common science experiment in schools in the 1960s to plate copper Lincoln cents with a variety of metals. I've heard of some even having been plated with mercury.

to CCF. Weight? Looks like some kind of plating or just an odd toning.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies and the welcomes, I appreciate it!

If it's plated, how can I determine what it's actually plated with and value?

It weighs 3.118 grams.

Havesomeone shoot it with an XRF gun. You will get a high reading for whatever element the plating is composed of. As far as value goes, that will be one cent. A plating is just damage. It doesn't add value.

1967 Lincoln Memorial cent, made in Philadelphia.

Those were made of brass (95% copper, 5% zinc)

In your case, it was damaged in circulation, perhaps plated in some metal, and circulated even further. A damaged coin.

Worth? Face value. About 1 cent. A dealer wouldn't buy it off you, no special value.

As for the metal, probably something without real value, like zinc, steel, aluminum, etc.
Very unlikely to be plated in anything of value, silver or platinum.

Feel free to spend it.

To me, it looks more like environmental damage rather than plating. In any event, it is not worth more than face value.

Sure, paint is possible - it's a kind of plating, I guess.
