My Franklin half collecting has stalled as I am specifically putting together a PCGS ms65 or ms65fbl set and finding appealling examples for certain dates are becoming difficult to find. Thinking of starting a short set of liberty walkers in ms66 while continuing to search for the franklins. This set seems to be a bit easier to put together. Only 20 coins to find. Thoughts? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I did this once about 15 years ago and it's a knockout set to look at! Good choice.

I'm doing the set in 66 right now, and I've loved every minute of it. Most dates are available for under $200, except for the early S mints. The key to the set is the 1941-S.

I've never liked short sets. To me they always appear to be missing something.

1. You could check with other collectors, will those certain dates become more or less difficult and/or expensive to find going forward. 2. Hone your numismatic (if need be), and or hunting skill, so you can find the difficult to find rounds that are ungraded, and just waiting to be found. 3. If the values are increasing, even if you don't hit your ideal grade goal every time, you will have converted powder into pieces that are increasing in value making it somewhat easier to trade up later. Just my Two Cents, far from expert opinion I'm sure.

I'm working on a Walker Short Set myself, although only in MS64 (a bit more affordable for my budget). most are in the $60 dollar range.. a few a bit more.. but none are crazy.. so a 20 coin set will take me a bit, but is very achievable... It's a great little set so far, and even at MS64, you find a good amount of variety, so picking really nice coins can make it a "fun hunt"... I'm doing them all in blast-white with strong strikes and no distracting marks on the obverse.. which makes the hunt a bit more challenging. I've had good luck at regional coin shows, as well as a few on ebay, but only after very careful looking.. I often ask for extra photos at different angles.. and I always make sure I have return ability.. But it is one of my favorite coins... just beautiful.. and a short set is a great way to get into Walkers.. which can get addicting! Good luck! Michael

Make sure you get well struck coins. I believe you can find MS-66 WL's with weak strikes. And there's LOTS of 1940's era that are weakly struck. Not good.

Just did the short set in PCGS 65. Makes a nice set. Make sure to get all of them with the thumb visible and you will have well struck coins.

65 is pretty easy to do. 66 gets tough with the S Mint coins.

Seems like both Franklin and LWH are not as popularas other series. Less stock to choose from at coin shows but also, maybe less competition at auctions.
