Hi,

First of all. Sorry for the horrible photographs. My phone is the only medium at hand at this moment.

This coin has been in my possession since I found it during a holiday in a heavy Roman populated historical area two years ago. I guess I was bit lucky.. I actually re-discovered it while cleaning out my house. Fortuna has been on my side since that first moment. It was love on first sight.

It seems that there's at least one silvered spot (?) amid the cemented dirt.

1) Is this indeed a bronze silvered coin? Can it be something else?
2) What's the best way to clean it?
3) (Bonus) I don't expect it to be ID'ed like this, but if anyone can. Please do.

Thanks in advance.

I do suggest that you crop your pictures. It might make a difference-we may be able to pick out the legend, which is almost visible now. I use my phone all the time-I take close ups and crop them and the results are pretty good.

I'll crop what he has for you if you like: By the way I can see the letters enough to think the ones I see match placement for Gallienus.

A bust like that is unique to Gallienus. The reverse is too encrusted to make out at the minute.

To clean, you have two options. If it is silvered, I think the silver-on-black look is best and I would advocate cleaning in olive oil which will darken the rest of the patina. You could also clean in distilled water, which would not affect the colour. The safest option is to soak long term, brushing every week or so. For distilled water, the water should be changed occasionally. If the patina is firm enough, you can use a scalpel/pin/toothpick to carefully work down the dirt, which is quicker but higher risk and more work.

Thanks! I will try the olive oil for this one. Why is this bust unique to Gallienus?

A simple olive dip already revealed a bit of the reverse and it does looks like 'Victory advancing left, carrying wreath and trophy'. No clue which variant. It looks like the last letters on the reverse are AVG.

Gallienus started off with a joint reign with Valerian, with busts similar to Valerians. He then had a quite lengthy reign, long enough for the style of coinage to shift and he issued loads and loads of coins in this style. By the time he was replaced by Claudius Gothicus, the bust style had morphed considerably again. Coupled with the recognisability of Claudius' image (even the very first coins of Claudius Gothicus are hard to mistake with Gallienus), this makes Gallienus' coinage stylistically distinct to any other rulers'.
