One small step towards completion. A bit darker than the 1884 and 1886 it rests between, but very similar details. 96 remaining! Guess I'll be a while.

To me, the upper obverse field appears cleaned, especially from K10 - K1. Thoughts, MikeF?

It's hard to argue with those pics. Could have been wiped many, many years ago.

I agree with the consensus of being cleaned, the abrasive marks clearly prominent around the head. A condition I noticed and weighed when buying it. Probably 75% of my collection from the 1930's back have been. None the less I can live with that because, for myself, I enjoy looking and touching a coin pondering on where it's been. All in all, not bad for $40.00.

Many thanks for the comments.

Maybe it has been cleaned, but this is one of those situations where I would say who cares. Good eye appeal and overall nice looking dime.

To Ballyhoo,
"I enjoy looking and touching a coin pondering on where it's been."

Thank you! I do the same. My favorites are Greek and Roman, especially from any date B.C. to 500 A.D. You just never know in that 2,000 years how many different people held those coins. Morgans and Peace are fun as well, so many of them, it's okay to play with some of them. But for the most part, the coins from last few hundred years, I don't touch.

Appreciate all the compliments. Have no idea why dimes seems to captivate me the most. Despite the other denominations, some series complete (Washington, Jefferson, Franklin).

You are quite welcome, SilverKeeper. Glad you found the forum!

Going backwards, from 1891 to 1882 they gradually fade from what you see (the later dates brighter AU) to high fine-borderline vf. Beyond that they progress lower towards vg10. So many key and semi-key dates that I don't want those to stand out like a sore thumb. As if this series wasn't hard enough to complete it became a challenge to say the least in doing so.

This is a really gorgeous specimen Ballyhoo, a really sharp coin with toning commensurate with its age! I agree with others, "who cares" if it was cleaned at one time over the last 130+ years! Incredible it survived in such high grade. I also like dimes, focusing on early Mercury dimes myself.
