Sorry for the spam, I found another 1982 D 3.1, lined it up with a program and as of all my research, it seems like a small date penny, any opinions?

It is a large date.
The 2 in the small date has an arch in its back.

Can you possibly explain to me what I'm missing here,

OK, look at you close up image above. On the large date as the 2 comes off the curve at the top it slant down in a straight diagonal line to the base. On a small date it curves around and then drops straight down the last little bit, kind of like an upside down 5.

Second the base of the large date 2 comes much closer to the rim than on the small date. On the large date the distance from the base of the 2 to the rim is about half the length of the base of the 2. On a small date you could almost fit another 2 in there.

Third look at the top loop of the 8. On the large date it is almost the same size as the bottom loop. On the small date it is only about 2/3 the size. It looks like the bottom two balls of a snowman.

This image of Coop's clearly shows the differences I mentioned. Note how the "diagonal" of the 2 curves on the small date, the distances of the base of the 2 to rim and the relative sizes of the loops of the 8.
