Hi

I just heard that J.T. Stanton died last October 2018: a genuine loss to the numismatic community involved with errors & varieties...

I have never seen Mr. Stanton so I did an image search and this funny prank story popped up that I wanted to share with CCF:

"Over time I would learn some of Bill Fivaz's "J.T. stories." In the mid-1990s, the two of them flew out to Colorado Springs to teach a class at the American Numismatic Association's Summer Seminar. When they unpacked their suitcases, Bill realized he'd forgotten to pack his undershorts. J.T. kindly drove his friend to the local K-mart to restock.

Later in the week, Bill was auctioneer at the Young Numismatists benefit auction. He ballyhooed a "Mystery Lot" that saw spirited bidding and finally sold for $400. J.T. insisted that Bill open the Mystery Lot in front of the audience.

Turns out it was a pair of his "tighty-whiteys"—J.T. had purloined them after they arrived at their dorm, had everyone at the ANA Summer Seminar autograph them, and put them up for bid as a prank. "That pair of underwear appeared in at least three more YN auctions over the years," Bill recalled, "and in the last one, they'd been 'slabbed' between two pieces of plastic. Thanks, J.T.!"

I remember that! I was attending the Summer Seminar that year. Somewhere I think I have some photos of them posing with the underware. I'll try and dig it up.

Mike Ellis is a good friend of mine, it was JT and Bill that introduced us at an earlier 1980's Summer Seminar. Those 3 guys together were always a barrel of laughs. The Bill Fivaz Hobo nickel collection was something to behold, he always brought unusual ones to show, and JT always had a half a dozen new varieties he had discovered over the previous year.

JT is missed greatly. Bill? Haven't heard much from him in a long time, and Mike just announced he is running again for an ANA board membership position.

Did anyone ever see JT Stantons cherry pickers ebay handle? I had read some of his auction listings and he had made the statement that to clear the fog off of 1970's coins such as Proof Ike's it was ok to use a distilled water and ammonia solution. Does anyone agree with that? Is that OK or will TPG detect that?

I will truly miss him.

@pch

With respect to your comment about the fog and ammonia I would strongly suggest that you create a thread in this forum below since it addresses issues about cleaning more directly and you will have more viewers interested in a common theme:

Nope, I have found a few old photos from that era, but none from the ANA Seminars. I found some from old coin shows with various other dealers I shared bourse tables with and some coin photos shot onsite. I have to ask Mike if he has any other photos from back then. We didn't have cool phones with cameras in them on our persons at all times like now days.

So I was typing a response about the Cherry picker's guide and went looking for an old photo I remembered of JT Stanton, and came across this post. Yes I was able too! I've been scanning a lot of old photos during lockdown last winter. Here you go:

An-Honorable/Prank-Salute-To-Jt-Stanton-Deceased-Cherrypickers-Guide-Author

Mike Ellis and Chuck Wishon holding the Bill Fivaz stolen by JT Stanton underware after being inscribed and "Slabbed P.U." Shot July, 1997 (according to my notes).

Note they say "Property of Marilyn Fivaz" on the elastic band (That's Bill's wife). Chuck Wishon is still dealing coins as far as I know living in Denver, Colorado he and Leonard Albrecht had a great coin store in Denver when I was growing up on the South East side of town. I still have a lot of coins I bought from them in their flips "Collector Coin Exchange" Chuck also worked with Len at ANACS for a time.

I took this during the annual ANA Summer Seminar YN Auction to raise money, I forget how many years these had been auctioned by that point. They keep returning each year.
