That could be an answer Coinfrog but I can't find anything on this thing and it is the correct weight at 4.71 grams.

I don't know about these. Can someone explain the points to look for in a real one?

Coinfrog, that's the very first place I searched through.

My friend, I am at a loss on this cent. In hand it is amazing to look at and you should have seen the poker face I made when I louped it! Btw, I picked it up for $40. If it's an unknown that will be money well spent.

The date was punched into the die separately, and by hand, after the eagle and the lettering. With identical doubling on both the eagle and the date that eliminates the possibility of RPD or DDO. I'm thinking MD on this, the size of the numerals has clearly decreased in size. It's especially noticeable on the base of the 1.

I had thought about the MD theory but there are two types of MD and this doesn't fit into either category. It is not flat or even shelflike. It's not high bounce MD. In hand the devises are raised and in comparison to my other 1858 the devises appears to be the same size. IF it is MD it is a type I have never seen. Could be some weird type of MD

I've noticed a lot of 19th century MD can be quite deceptive. This coin being slightly worn and a little beat up isn't helping either.

I have just started recently getting into the Classic coins and have louped quite a few coins with this deceptive MD you're talking about. On almost all of which I have viewed it's really light and subtle. I agree the coins condition makes this one a little trickier to decipher.

Tanman said it well. Looks like MD to me too which is often more tricky to decipher on classic coinage. Not too bad at $40!
