Ive been searching Google and different sites for over an hour and can't find anything that looks like this penny. Been in my possession for about 20 years now, I barely got into collecting pennies when I was a kid. I'm going to a coin appraiser tomorrow, but my curiosity is getting the best of me this evening.

If you have it up close to your face in the light, you can see the texture of the regular sized Lincoln underneath. It appears to have been double stamped, smoothing out what is underneath and you can vaguely see an enlarged Lincoln nose and chin to the right and an enlarged RTY (of liberty) to the left. May need a microscope to see where the original mint year was stamped over.

Thanks in advance for any help in identifying this type of error or value!

Looks like a die cap error. It's a nice find. How did you acquire this coin?

@alktrio23, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes this coin looks interesting. I agree with @giwalsh that a pic of the other side would be useful. Thx.

We would need a pic of the reverse to be sure, but I agree it is most likely a struck through die cap.

Thank you all soooo much!! I'll take a picture of the reverse side but I also thought I saw the memorial through the smooth surface to the right. You can also see 1 9 down towards right center bottom.

Funny story I'm 35 now and going through a closet purge. When I was a young teen, my mom's then boyfriend thought it would be a cool hobby (penny collection books) for us. So he'd take us to the bank to get rolls of pennies and one day I just stumbled upon it....obviously catching my eye immediately. Always thought about looking into it, I guess I wasn't serious until now!!

From what I've seen I'd give it a rough quote on the obverse pic (front) of about ~$30-$60. Depends on overall condition of coin. Die caps are very hard to grade.

Tried to get a few different angles. I brought it to a coin and jeweler a few weeks ago and he suggested PCGS, called them and that led me to the appraiser in the Chicago suburbs. They were closed so I'll try tomorrow!

I'd grade this XF-45. PCGS would cost a lot and would render a poor ROI. What about a service like ANACS? That way there is no membership fee.

Nice one though the date is 1973 you can tell because it's RDV-003 only used in 1973. Final Call: 1973 LMC Struck through thick late stage obverse die cap.

That's a great find ! I have only found one struck through a capped die coin and let's just say I have looked at quite a few little round discs in the last thirty years. Hope this inspires you to dig deeper into the hobby!
GC , I don't think this one has the reverse of 1973. The designers initials would be taller for 003. This one looks to have RDV-004 which would place the date after 1973.
