I recently retired and have some time to go through the coins I inherited in March. My dad was not a serious coin collector, he was someone who just stashed coins (he thought had value) in cigar cans. Lots of silver dollars and half dollars. I'm in a Kennedy half dollar can now and see early 1970s (mostly 71 and 74,76), some 1960's (mostly 1967)and others. All are circulated, some appear to be in excellent condition others good to fair. Approximately 250 coins. I understand the coins from 60s have some value and should not be cashed in. Not so sure what I should do with the rest. I did a little research and found the 70s coins sell to dealers at face value. I don't need to sell coins so collecting those with value is an option. Member advice would be helpful. Thanks.

I think that we will need a list of dates and mint marks to give you better ideas. however the 65-69 halfs are 40% silver, 64 and older are 90% there are early 70 silver clad versions as well. the Kennedies if circulated are basically bullion coins, if you are not a coin collector or PM stacker you can easily sell these at spot.

There are rare versions or proofs that may be worth more, if you have one or 2 coins you have specific questions on please post some pictures, there are lots of experts here.

also do not clean your coins, this is a bad thing, you can hurt the value if you do have something with numismatic value.

Unless in pristine condition, the ones dated from 1971 to 1979 are spenders. Dealers won't buy them from you since they can get them at banks.

. I can't give any more advice than the experts who've already chimed in, but if you need more info on the coins, here's a link to Numista set for Kennedys in the 60's and 70's.

Of you look it up there is a book called the Red Book by Whitman Publishing. In it you can find a real lot about almost every coin you have. Just don't go by the prices shown since they are greatly inflated. You should be able to find one at almost any hobby store or on line stores such as Wizard coins.
