I am a hunter of medals and thought I might have found this elusive variety. The one with Jefferson and Napoleon on the obverse and the map of the United States on the reverse without the St. Louis Star.
The seller admits there is a gouge in the Gulf of Mexico area above the date there. As if something was removed.

But looking at the poor images, and comparing to another real one I found an image of, the denticles look poor and there should be better detail overall.

So I am wondering if there ever were COPY medals made of this issue? I am thinking that that is exactly what was removed from that area in the Gulf of Mexico.
The word COPY!

If I were sure this was a an official souvenir, it would still be a valuable as almost all of these in all compositions have the shining star where St Louis is on the map.

I agree with your assessment that the word copy was probably removed.

I'm with the others. Whatever they used to polish the Gulf area appears to have also removed the top of the date, the Delta toe and the water lines. I haven't seen a "Copy" of this SCD, but it wouldn't surprise me if they're out there.

IMHO, it has the appearance of a cast copy, what with the grainy surface. I'm guessing that, if weighed, it would be lighter than the originals.
