Hello all, new guy here. Total coin rookie. I've done some research and I understand all of the original 1913 Liberty V nickels have been accounted for and fake/repop ones are very common. This one has been in my wife's family for 50 plus years going from her grandfather to her dad, unfortunately both are deceased. Both were avid coin collectors with many other coins we haven't even looked at. I have no delusions this coin is original but from the looks of it to my uneducated eye this possibly is an original nickel from that era that was modified. I tried to attach a picture. So to the Liberty V nickel experts what are your opinions? Thanks. Edited by Tineetawny 01/25/2019 8:06 pm

Undoubtedly a FAKE. Likely a 1912 altered date.

Any reason you would think it was a 1912? I would think it would be easier to modify 1910 nickel?

It doesn't matter. It's a fake in any event.

@Tineetawny, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with @JB that this coin has an altered date. When I enlarge and enhance your pic, it does look like there is a remnant of a zero as the last digit of the date, but better pics might confirm.

Thanks Spence.
I remember having a few conversations about this coin with my father in law about 20 years ago. It's hard to remember all the details but I recall he told me he got the coin from a well know coin dealer who traveled across the US in the 50's and 60's stopping at local coin shops. The coin date must have been altered before my FIL bought it but who knows when or where.

At least you know the 19 hasn't been altered.

The 3 is misshapen. 100% sure it's been altered from another date. Not a 1913. to the CCF!

to the CCF Yep, an altered date for sure. Some years ago, I bought a few of these "1913" altered nickels at a coin shop in Louisville. The guy who sold them to me said that they were made locally. My purpose in buying them was to have some fun, generate conversation and promote awareness among collectors, educating them in the process. Also, I'd long collected fakes in many forms .... altered coins, contemporary counterfeits, cast copies, souvenir copies, etc. Altered coins are "legitimate" collectibles; this, despite the fact that they pose a threat in the hands of crooks.
