Just Post Strike Damage ( PSD) unfortunately. On the reverse, you can see the flattened metal on that area. It's was altered after it left the U.S. Mint.

If you look at the Obverse and Reverse in the areas where the piece is, there doesn't seem to be anything missing on the devices of the coin. The date area is complete, and the area on the reverse where it says AMERICA is also complete. So where did the piece come from ?
better closeup photos would be greatly appreciated.

It is PSD and here's why I think it is. First it's zinc, second is that because it is zinc the exposed zinc core would have already started the process of breaking down and showing what is commonly called zinc rot. I think the PSD happened within the last year or so to your cent given it's age. That is just my opinion my friend.

I wonder if it was a break off from another coin that was stuck onto this coin. Note on the areas where it looked like it folded over, it is plated. Above on the debris piece we see gray like zinc that was struck onto that edge of the coin. While it looks like soldier, it maybe a struck debris on the coin. They way to check? Check the weight. It should be a bit heavier than 2.5 grams.

2.5 grams on the button, it looks like its one peace , but cut real clean , the part that really get me is under the date looks copper and the middle should be zinc right (like the on the back ), but it looks like they mixed as it cut (pressed ,ect.) and on the last 2 pics you see to the left like a fold go to the back ,I know its just a penny , thank for looking , and happy hunting

How about a closer view of America? That area might reveal something?

It's just a damaged coin. It cannot be a genuine U.S. Mint error.
