My dad gave me his LHC collection years ago when I was a kid so that I could keep adding to it. He worked on it in the mid 50s and they are stored in those old Whitman folders where you can only see the obverse of each coin. I have all the ones from 1909 through the 50s with the exception of some of the serious keys and semi-keys.
The cool thing about it is that he assembled this collection through his own pocket change! Not a single item was purchased. I took over and added to it with stuff from the 60s through early 80s and stopped there until now.
I popped a few of the old wheaties out to look at the reverse and unfortunately the 50 plus years that they've been chilling in the album has done its toll...the reverse of many of them has been rubbed down and discolored in some instances.
I am wondering if I should just get a decent album (the kind with the plastic slides) and transfer them. Or should I leave them in the old albums? How do most of you keep your LHCs?

Get anything but one of those old Whitman albums, they're no good. Perhaps you might try investing in a nicer Harris folder, or as you mentioned, one with the plastic slides.

The problem is that glue is slathered over the entire paper back of any folder. This glue can cause toning/tarnish to the reverse of the coins (it's not always pretty). Albums offer differing degrees of protection (depending on brand). Transferring the coins to an album should slow if not stop the toning.
I've only ever used Whitman and Dansco albums. The Whitman are fine but the Dansco are definitely better quality and will hold up better.

I don't care for the albums. I have all mine in 2x2's and airtites, in plastic sheets, in 3 ring binders. Then I put the whole binder into a giant ziplock.

I would definitely move the coins out of the folder and into a proper album. Dansco is my recommendation since that is what I use.
Moving them to the 2x2s with plastic sheets that BadThad mentions is a good suggestion as well. You might even come out cheaper since you can buy them in bulk and you do not have to get a fancy binder.
Whatever you choose, your cents will be better off than they are in these or any folders.

I use 1 1/2 X1 1/2 Flips and pages for smaller coins. A 1 1/2 pages hold alot more coins. I get mine from a local coin store Flips are 100 for $5.00 and $1.00 a page. You can also get them from on line dealers. Seeking :Bags for my binders (Good Idea Thad) Rainman

The Whitman and Harris folders are good for just starting out or lower grade coins. The reason I say this is that these coins with always be exposed to the elements, people touching them and of course the glue issue mentioned before. The Whitman's with plastic slides and you can see both sides are okay but for real protection you want to find something that will keep as much of the environment out as possible. The Dansco folders may be a good place to look where there is some minor damage and it sounds as if these may not be the highest grade where they were taken from change. But if you want them to really last, then take Badthad's advice and find an airtite that you like. I am not 100% sure but I think this is what most people are referring to: http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/pro...ock-2x2.htmlThis is also a great site for all types of supplies and resources.

Im not sure what you mean by rubbed down ,, the coins do not move in the holes of the folder ?
can you post a picture or two ?
I have coins that have been in whitmans for close to 40 years with no ill effects .
I hear about coins being damaged from the folders but if I had to guess its not so much the folders as the environment that the folders and coins are stored in .

Quote: Seeking :Bags for my binders I get them at my local grocery store! They have a couple brands including ZipLock. They are SUPER giant, I can fit two 3-ring binders stuffed with pages into just one bag....and there's still room. LOL

Agreed....it's all in how the folder is stored IMO too.

I'll snap some pics and post them tonight, if I get a chance. I may not be describing the condition of the reverses properly. Actually these folders have been sitting on closet shelves for virtually 50 years.

OK I will check for pics when I get home from work .
Closet shelves un protected is not a good thing ! changes in humidity ,temperature and not to mention the gasses which are present in most closets , from cloth, papers ,leather whatever all contribute to the condition of the coins stored in such a manner .
I keep my folders triple wrapped in aluminum foil , and stored in a stable cool dry environment .
the aluminum foil is controversial , and was shown to me by a long time collector back in the 60's when whitmans were pretty much all that was available as far as folders or albums are concerned ,,but for me it has worked well and the coins look just like the day I put them in as a kid .
I was lucky to have a mentor who believed and knew that storage was paramount to having a collection which retains its beauty and value ,,years can be cruel to coins left to the elements .
He also never polished His coins which was the norm to some degree then nor did He lacquer his cents which also occurred with some regularity by the old collectors .

Quote: I would definitely move the coins out of the folder and into a proper album ......definately agree with that !......really the "display" is sooooooo much better too and more protective (though still not airtight in albums).....storage, as mentioned, is very key. Aluminum foil, Ziplocks...... any of these should be used regardless of what "folder" or "album" you pick...IMHO. Long term storage in a "bad spot" can lead to devestating results for the condition of coins !...
