I really wish the mint would invest their time and energy into better coin designs instead of rehashing the same stuff with new packaging.

Sounds like a not money scam from the Mint. Why the prosperity set? We live in American and Americans don't believe that 8's are good luck. I think the mint wants to branch out to the foreign market in order to make even more money.

From what I can see, the set costs $122.98 over buying each of them on their own.
Set = $1,228.88
Eagle = $565.95 Buffalo = $539.95
So that is $1105.90
I don't think the case is worth that much extra.

I agree. I believe that investment in the classic gold coins is a better choice and I like the designs better.

Well, the description makes no mention of a mintmark on these coins so I would assume they are the same coins as the mint sells to their distributors. It seems they are going into competition with their own customers. Not a smart move in my opinion.

Quote: The number "8" is traditionally associated with wealth and prosperity in Asian cultures. Furthermore, this date only occurs once every 100 years. I'm just sad I didn't get that singular Lucky 7/7/7 date set when it came out last year. I guess I'm early for the unique 9/9/9 set too.

Just because the mint makes it, does not mean you have to buy it! Move along now, nothing to see here.

I think that is exactly what is going on. The Director of the Mint, Edmund Moy, is of Chinese descent, and I have seen him make interview comments in the past about the Chinese market and how the Chinese interest in the American bullion programs is growing. Obviously, 8s are a big deal in Chinese culture and this set is trying to capitalize on that Chinese interest. Many would view this as a bit controversial but other world mints have been trying to appeal to an international audience for years and the US Mint is kind of playing "catch up".

I really suspect the Mint is on the verge of distroying the coin collecting hobby with excessive products like the US Postage stamps. I'm just waiting for the Elvis Commemorative coins.
