Hi Banknote collectors.I'm curious about your opinions on when you will/will not add a damaged note to your collections....would you not add one for, pinholes (6 or less), rips into margin, staining, rounded corners, anything else that is your limit? what do you hate the most? ....I'm basing this mostly on scarce nationals,or other hard to find notes..I would have to think that any of the above makes it hard to get a grade higher than VF..What say you?.Thanks.......

I do my best to stay away from problem notes, and only own one note in which there are are less than 10 known.

On expensive (>$1,000) notes, my basement is VF *PQ with nice eye appeal, or I do without it until I have more to invest.

I, unlike others, keep all notes that are interesting to me. I only collect notes from circulation and at the end on the year I go through the notes that I've collected and "thin the herd". BTW, I'm not saying that one way is better than the other.

Because there are simply so many notes that I'd like to own, I'll wait for a choice high VF or better specimen in one series rather than buy a scarcer problem note in another series. I'm basically a condition nut when it comes to paper money. It's odd - I can thoroughly enjoy a nice evenly-worn G or VG coin, but G or VG notes to me are quite unappealing.

It also depends on what you collect and perhaps my perspective is a bit different than the general type note collector. My main focus is national currency, and with nationals you have to take what you can get. There may only be three or four notes known and they are all rags. Are you gonna wait around and wait for a better example? Certainly not. Pass up a note because it has tears or a stain? No way.

On the more common banks/notes you can wait for a better example, but with the rare stuff, you gotta grab it regardless of its condition. If you wait around for PQ and grades above VF in nationals, you're gonna be sorely disappointed.

Edit to add: Most of my national collection is VF or less, with most probably in the F range. Why? Because that's all that's out there.

Agree completely. I mostly collect large size notes by type and there's always plenty out there in high grades to choose from!

I didn't like cancelled stamps either as a kid.

@coinfrog, I feel the same way about banknotes. I can accept heavily worn coins, but heavily worn banknotes just look like filthy rags to me, even if they are rare.

Here's a Inverted overprint Web serial # A85720233F with a tear I purchased to include with my A85720232F error as it's difficult to locate error notes relested into circulation from the same bank pack, than separated thereafter.

I'm in the process of finding the best way to repair this note by practicing different methods in tear-repair.

I also purchased 3 additional web inverts last month after my personal census shows just how rare they are.

After purchasing both web overprint on back examples as pictured in the Kvederas 2004 edition, his 2018 edition cuts the value in half from $5,000 to $2,500.
