I decided to give it another shot with acetone on a better coin, with green gunk that I'd like to alleviate. Before and after. The "after" is after 2 hours in acetone and 4 rounds of gentle rolling with cotton swab. While the flat areas seem improved, and the corn area, one thing I noticed right away under the microscope is that the green stuff turned milky white and seemingly got bigger in places. Should I soak for days now or just leave it? So far I haven't made it worse, but it seems rather tenacious.

Coin didn't really get whiter, just the lighting.

Length of time using Acetone means little. Usually after only a few minutes it has done all it can do. You could leave a coin in Acetone for possibly a year with no difference than a few minutes or hours.

The green stuff is verdigris. Forget the acetone. I would use Verdi-Care on that coin

You have to realize that the acetone doesn't work on every kind of problem a coin has . I agree after a short soak then Verdi-Care should have been used on that coin .
This coin looks like it had a prier cleaning probably by someone trying to get a lot more green and dark crud off that coin before you . Dull, lifeless light grey color is a dead giver-way .
