Hi there guys!I'm trying to see what some of you feel about buying this coin or if you'd buy it considering its flaws and what value do you think it has.The worst I've seen is a VG-F piece sold for $258.75,before buyer's premium I believe.
The coin is a scarce/rare Hohenlohe-Neuenstein-Neuenstein 1697-GFN thaler,VF i'd say,graffiti,tooled fields,the usual worn shoulder of the type.Thank you in advance!

The price you quoted is 5 yrs. old. There's so few of them, it's hard to

determine a price, to me.

CoinArchives has a late 2018 sale at 500 euro for a VF example maybe with fewer flaws.
So perhaps those two prices bracket the value of yours?

Paul - there have been several sales of this piece, most recently in April of 2018, an MS63 hammered at 4K at Heritage.

This particular piece hammered at 400EUR in December of 2017. As you can see, the detail and state of preservation of your example is superior, but as you mentioned, there are scratches on both the obv and reverse. Furthermore, to my eyes, I'd also add the coin has been tooled/fields smoothed or altered, and probably cleaned.

The coin below, besides being in worse condition also seems to suffer from PVC damage, so 400 EUR + commission was paid for a problem coin.

In terms of pricing, I'd estimate a fair price of 300-400EUR for your example. What I mean by that is I believe there are buyers of this coin at this level. I'm sure some not bothered by the problems could go higher. Hope that helps.

Thank you for your input guys!Good or bad, the coin will be with me soon and putting the pros and cons in balance after buying it made me have some doubts about my purchase.I paid 300usd as a best offer on ebay but failed to notice the tooled fields(no close inspection from my side!) as I made the deal on monday morning and I was half asleep, with a thousand other things on my head. What I like about this particular thaler is the rev. design/message with the ''knight on horseback right, trampling three figures representing Gluttony, Greed and the Catholic Church, snake and toad below'' and the rim that looks very similar to the one of the 1677 West Friesland dukaat, which is also a superb coin,at least in my view.
cableguy815 Congrats on the 1819 Denmark Speciedaler! That's a major hit!

Paul I think 300USD is an excellent deal. Especially if it's through ebay (which means no 20% premium). At that price point, even with scratches and tooling, it's a solid buy. As for tooling, it seems that way to me... I may be wrong. When you get it, just make sure you do a thorough authenticity check (weight, magnetism, etc). It looks legit to me but ebay items always require extra caution.

Thanks on the speciedaler. It's a very nice piece that I'm particularly proud of :)

cableguy815 I'm pretty sure it's tooling too and my paranoid nature(numismatics only!)means that i'll be doing a proper check on the coin!
It's hard not to be proud of a coin like that!
