I remember reading a post a while back where someone posted a coin with similar strips and called it a woody? -- Something about the stripes going opposite on the obverse and reverse?

Also, MD on LIBERTY?

I agree with MD on the LIBERTY. As said above, these are roller lines. They will give off a woody effect, but they are not caused by the same thing.

Roller lines are essentially stains embedded into the coin metal by dirty rollers used to create the proper thickness coin stock. A "Woody" is an alloy mixing issue and generally does not create fine lines like that and is more common on earlier years.

Also- with "woodys" are the markings raised at all? Or will it have a smooth surface?
