If it were an Indian Head cent, then I would say Longacre doubling. The reason would be that there appears to be doubling on the lower part of the letter, why nothing at the top part of the letter. If it were a doubled die, then that area would also be doubled. I just don't know if that was also present on the Three Cent pieces. Not my expertise.

ADDED:
A little more information on them.

Guess who designed them?
SECOND ADDITION:
More information on longacre doubling.

It is a doubled die. There actually is evidence of the doubling on the top of the letter, but wear has eliminated most of it.

Hi,

Also, there is a nice split on the foot of the lower part of the I.

Thanks,
Bill

Still as mentioned in another post. It is fairly common on 3-cent nickel pieces.
