Gaius Messius Quintus Trajanus Decius, proclaimed emperor by troops under his command, was able to make his usurpation stick by defeating Philip (the Arab) in battle. His reign was notable for its persecution of Christians, including the execution of Pope Fabian. However, Trajan Decius ruled for less than two years, dying fighting Goths who had invaded the Balkans.

I have this specimen as RIC 16c (Sear 9374, RSC 49).

Who did mess with him was King Cniva of the Goths. Trajan Decius' reputation as a competent military man notwithstanding, Cniva lured him into a marsh where he and his legions became bogged down and then were simply slaughtered. Perhaps surprisingly considering how often emperors took a direct hand in campaigning, this gave Trajan Decius the dubious distinction of being the first emperor to be killed in combat against an external enemy.

Beautiful coin and congrats to you! Ever since I saw this episode of the "ROME Rise and Fall of an Empire" I wanted a specimen of this fine soldier.

The specimen I've shared actually is also the first Decius I've acquired. I don't believe they're rare or even scarce, but nonetheless I've come across far fewer of them than, say, of issues of Philip the Arab or Postumus.
