Pics. are in natural sunlight thus the washed appearence, actual color looks mellow light brown unaltered. Haggled over these two and paid $20.00 for 09 and 70.00 for the 31 S. Of course the shop listed them AU-53 and MS 62. My opinion was XF-40 and AU-58 with a comment to him about the scratch. He thus protested but accepted.
Have I learned anything on this forum? Opinions solicited tear away take the gloves off and let me have it! Thanks all.

I can agree with you about the VDB being an EF-40 But the 31-S is nowhere near a 58 . I think you paid too much for both of those coins . I hope the color is as better as you say it is . Sorry to burst your bubble .

I am not good at grading, with that said:09 @40 and 31-S @35. I would have passed on both. The 09 because of the spots on the rev and the ding in his beard. The 31-S because of scratch on LIBERTY. Here is a link on values, you should put in your bookmarks...http://www.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices/fmv.shtml

XF45 and VF30. 09VDB seems rubbed in the field.

I'd say XF-45 on the 09VDB, and VF-35 on the 31-S.

The VDB picture is way off, I'm sure it's full BN if a dealer had it at 62....hard to estimate from those pics.

Can't argue with unanimous opinions, thanks everyone. I'm coming around one step forward 2 back. T-Bop , I paid too much for them but man they looked good at the shop. Good lesson for me, gotta cool my pipes on semi-keys, caution henceforth. Well, bet the dealers happy? Grrrrr.

my suggestion would be to ask the owner if you can take photos there so that you can take your time to decide. what I have done in the past was have them give me two of the same date knowing that only one of them is the one I'm interested in and that I cant decide which one I want. normally they will allow you to do that knowing that they have a possible sale of one of them. post the serious one here for comments prior to purchasing.
