*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***I am not aware of any zinc 1981 cents being found. While some 1982 cents were actually struck in 1981, I think it most unlikely that any would be Zinc planchets, since copper was still in use. Zinc Alloy planchets were first used at the West Point Mint in January 1982 and then at the Denver Mint on October 21 of 1982. Those struck at West Point did not have a Mint Mark. I do not know if any were struck in Philadelphia. So when did Philadelphia first strike Zinc - what month/year? Edited by Pete2226 02/18/2019 1:03 pm

1982. You have the correct answer to your question.

Thanks, Coop - I was really looking for more exact info, so I have edited my post to reflect that.
In what month/year did Philadelphia first strike zinc planchets? I assume it was 1982, but do not know that for a fact and I do not know the month.

A quote from CoinWeek: Quote: The first zinc-based Lincoln cents were struck at the West Point Mint on January 7, 1982. These coins, along with 1,587,245 business-strike zinc cents made at the San Francisco Mint that year, do not contain mintmarks; the Philadelphia Mint would take up production of the new zinc cents early in the year as well.
However, the Denver Mint did not strike the new zinc pennies until October 21 - a little more than one month after the U.S. Mint decided it was time to create a new obverse master hub that resulted in a smaller-sized date. Edit: This surprises me since the vast majority of 1982 cents that I've found have been copper. Seems like most would be zinc based on this info.

They wanted to use all the copper planchets first. There would be no need for them after they were gone. (Well, until 2009)

My memories from reading Coin World back in 1982 were that the change over happened later in the year than what CoinWeek says. I know Coin World reported the monthly production figures and they DID report when the change over happened. Problem is I don't have access to a complete set of 1982 Coin World. If there is a member living in the Colorado Springs area that could go to the ANA Library they do have a full set and the change over point could be narrowed down, plus a fairly close mintage figure for each type could be determined. (Figures that DON'T appear in the standard references.)

Thank you Conder101. I have asked about the availability of 1982 Coin World issues in another group I am in.

I still have a seven roll set of the varieties of the cents of 1982 from Virg Marshall III.

I have struck out on finding Coin World magazine copies for 1982. I have been watching for some to come up for sale, but no luck. I have checked with the ANA Library and they do not loan out copies of periodicals. I have been to Colorado Springs, but it is doubtful it will ever happen again for me. I have checked with the US Mint, and they inform me that answers to questions like I am asking are to be found in the National Archives. No record I have found there indicates it can be helpful. SO: if anyone runs across an issue of Coin World from 1982, let me know!

Hi Coop - I am guessing Mike and others may well have all/most back issues of Coin World. In this thread, Conder101 said: Quote:My memories from reading Coin World back in 1982 were that the change over happened later in the year than what CoinWeek says. (Figures that DON'T appear in the standard references.) This means I need to obtain every issue from 1982 (and perhaps the first one or two from 1983 also!) in order to dig out the information. I am not that comfortable asking someone else to do that digging for me, or even to box up all issues and send to me. I guess that leaves me watching the market for any of these issues coming up for sale!

1. You could contact Mike to see if he knows the answer to your question. 2. Set up a search on ebay for each month of 1982 Coin World and save the search, so every time something is posted, you will be notified.
