Hi everyone, I am presently eyeing an 1821 Zecatecas 8 Reales had by a local reputable dealer. Unfortunately, I do not have photos to share. While the details on the obverse and reverse look good to me, the weight is a bit high - 27.8 grams. Moreover, the edge looks dissimilar to earlier 8s.In fact, many of the circles and rectangles of the edge appear filled. In other words, there is not an inner hole of many of the circles or rectangles.

Can everyone share pics of the edges of their Zecatecas 8 reals from 1821 or so? Thanks!

I would be very suspicious of any 8R that weighs 27.8 grams. The description of the edge does not sound good either.

There was a range of variation in weight but yours is at the extreme high end of that range.

Did you check for two opposing overlaps in the edge design? The edge mill used 2 parallel straight bars to roll the edge design onto the blank. The lap should be no more than a couple segments and there are never 3 overlaps present.

Also look for regularity in the sizes and shapes of the segments - in 1821 at Zacatecas edge segment punches were used.

Even for a '21 Zs?

swamperbob & realeswatcher - Thanks for the input!

I'm becoming increasingly suspicious of this piece.

realeswatcher I would look closely at any 8R that far out of line including the 1821 Zs. I would do a specific gravity to check the alloy. That will give a far better answer than any visual check in most cases.

Some of the war issues are heavy due to crude operations at the branch mint. However by 1820 Zacatecas had gotten its act together.
