Quote:Where did you receive this promo code? I have never seen it on mint.ca, by mail, or from my representative. It was from another coin forum. There are also other discounts with the FEB19 code: Spend $50, get $5 off, $100/$15, $150/$30. Promo code ends March 8.

I like it! Thank you for pictures and the Promo code. There is no big difference between it and one of the Big Halves from the recent years, but this one double dated and with young Queen....so will pass. Otherwise would load.

Quote: Just called the mint again, today.. sold out.. I'm not surprised. Anyone that collects 50 cent pieces or born in 1959 would have purchased it. Providing they were a higher end Master club member.

Quote:How is this coin expensive when all RCM 1 oz coins are $100 and above. That's precisely the reason why I'm no longer a MC member...

Since a lot op people collect 50c pieces, including small gold ones, 5oz silver and 2oz silver - these ones have no chance to stay on the shelves. Investment? No. Quick profit? Probably Collection? Yes!

Collectibles can have a momentary price demand / peak while others can develop sometime later. Yet, demand eventually wanes and price goes down. Case in point: 1972 2-dollar specimen set. Issue price was $12. In 1974, the 2-$1 specimen sets were valued: 1971: $18 1972: $15 <-- cheaper than 1971 In 1977, the 1972 overtook the 1971: 1971: $25 1972: $28 By 1979, the frenzy for the 1972 set had started: 1971: $25 1972: $65 Continued in 1981: 1971: $25 1972: $75 Price of 1972 set peaked in 1983 at $120 but started to come down. In 1988: 1971: $18 1972: $80 Price decreased since then, 36 years later in 2016: 1971: $20 1972: $45 Today there is little distinction in price on ebay between 1971 and 1972. The collectibility/rarity aspect is virtually gone. What remains is mostly the intrinsic value. One day perhaps rarity will prevail again. BTW - that $12 invested in 1972 at an average 8% return would be worth $450.00 today.

Canadian_coins - I appreciate your research and the math is correct.
Just a question on your last statement - what investment has averaged 8% over more than 45 years? Some years I have got 8%, but lots of years 6%, 4%, 0, occasionally negative returns. I'd have probably used a number more like 5%, giving I believe a number around $120 return.
Still you make a good point and I agree. Most non circulating collector coins won't yield 8%, won't yield 5% yearly long term, and many will yield no profit ten years down the road based on the high prices above bullion value.
I own two silver year sets and maybe five individual coins NCLT. I had sentimental reasons for buying those and something would have to be really impressive for me to buy another.
