I was at my local coin shop today looking at some of their gold buffalos.

From what I understand, all these were minted at west point. I noticed the proof coins had the "W" mint mark is on the obverse side behind the neck. When I looked at the regular finish ones, there was no mint mark.

Why is this? Or is the mint mark in a different location for the regular MS buffalos?

The reason there is no mint mark on the regular finish is because these are meant to be viewed as bullion coins rather than collector coins.

The Mint strikes Proof finish coins to satisfy collector demands for a mint marked version.

Coin dealers, pawn shops, etc. could care less whether its uncirculated or proof---most would price them spot plus a premium.

Others may disagree on my last point.

Yep. You'll find the same is true with bullion American Silver Eagles ( no mint mark).
