The reason it can't be a clogged die is this: The post that forms the device that forms the center. is raised, to a point. You can had Grease Fill a raised area on a die. Grease only fills the incuse areas on a die. So on a coin the incuse areas are the raised areas on the coin. But then the post breaks off, then the little area you are seeing is not the top of the post, but actually the neat bottom of the post. Because of the stub at the bottom of the post, on the coin it appears as just a small indent on the mint mark. The post can also break off into the die die below the post and it will leave a raised area above the filled mint mark. (Dies are negatives of coins)
