Several weeks back I posted about some recently acquired SBA near dates. I had several helpful responses within hours. I continued to lurk the boards and became very interested in all the post. My grandfather was an avid coin collector and left me parts of his collection. I know very little about coins, but like the whole idea of roll hunting, etc... Is there any publications on what modern coins have more value (dates, mints, errors, etc..)? Or do you guys have any list of coins I should be looking for at banks. At this time, I dont see me buying boxes of halfs or dollars, but have access to a lot of pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters.

Thanks,

Mike
Rest in Peace

The Cherrypicker's Guide comes to mind. Dunno if it's been updated.

I'm not too sure what a cherry picker's guide is. I mostly just look for whatever is mentioned in my coin books.

This might help...most suppliers have both. The CherryPickers Guide is around $35 and the Red Book is around $15.

Here's a link to a very trusted site

The question is: do you want this for modern coins, older coins or both? From there you can break down into different groups of books to look at.

If you are looking through the coins you were given then the cherry picking guide is a must. This book will let you know what (if any) coins you have are special or normal and how to look for the small items that most people will glance over. Now, if there is a certain type of coin you plan on looking for then I suggest getting books JUST on that coin. You can go to http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/pro...enomination/ and look at the different books for sale there to help out with. If you just want a general idea then there are multiple websites to look at. Personally, I deal mainly with cents so I do not know of a lot of sites for other coins, but these are the ones I use on a regular basis:
http://www.lincolncentresource.com/index.html
http://koinpro.tripod.com/
http://www.coppercoins.com/
Many of the members here can help point you to other similar sites for other coins. The best part about these sites is that they are FREE and easy to learn from and start your own list.

The best advice I can give on roll hunting and looking at loose change is if it does not look right then keep it.
