During the 1950's, the Wheat cent dies were way over used. When they were run past normal retirement, the dies started breaking down, but were continued to be use even more. So there were a lot of die chips that appeared during that time. That is what you have on the '5' of the date, an example of a very tired die chipping. (very common to find these in these few years)
