I bought this 1873 closed 3 Indian Head cent at a swap meet this morning. It is worn but it will fill a hole.

It has a very nice date!
What does it mean when they say open/closed three?

A details coin, unfortunately. Mid-way through 1873, the numeral 3 was redesigned to open up more space between the two knobs - people were confusing the earlier style with 1878 because these knobs were so close together.

For further reading on this subject look for a book titled "1873-1873" by Harry X, Boosel. It's out of print, but a very good reference on the subject. Harry was known as Mr. 1873 and hopefully the book will eventually get placed on the Newman Numismatic Research site, most all of his correspondence with Eric P. Newman has already been scanned and put up there.
