I came across this 1884 "Indian head" in G-Vg grade. I was actually trying to determine a grade and was having difficulty pinpointing a grade because of the details, or lack thereof, on the devices.

Hmmm... Most of the devices perimeters were well defined but the inner details were blurry to missing. I checked the rim to make sure it was at least Good and realized the denticiles were mostly missing.

That's when I realized I'm pretty sure this is a contemporary fake from the era.

If you ladies and gents could please confirm or correct my attribution I would be very grateful as I don't do much with this series and would love to know that some things are starting to sink in.

Thanks in advance.

Just a well-worn genuine Indian cent in my opinion.

the effort counterfeiting would likely far outweigh the value of the coin

Just a regular Indian cent which has barely withstood the test of time. Put it in an album if you have an open spot. To be upgraded later.

Thanks for the comments and replying.
I just thought more of the space between the denticles would be more defined. Especially since the area between them is supposed to be even with the field. Could the dies not be hubbed as deeply into the die stock to cause the space between the denticles to wear like this one?

As far as expending so much effort back then, since there are about 150 cents to a pound, it would be a way for someone back then to turn +- 3o cents worth of copper into $1.50 without much chance of getting prosecuted. Similar to what caused the popularity of Civil War Tokens.

Thanks again.

It's heavily worn, but genuine.
