Are the Western Union money orders that have Australia Post on them postal money orders? Or are there WU offices in the post office? What's the deal? Inquiring minds want to know.

We get them for ebay auctions all the time. They're in US dollars, definitely WU, and have Australia Post branded right on them. We've been getting them for years.

Now this is a beef I have. If I get a WU money order in any currency other than AU$ and I take it to a post office (which is a WU agent) they will not cash it. If I take it to the bank they treat it like an overseas cheque and charge large $$$ to cash it. You will find many sellers in Australia just will not accept them.

Interesting thread Please give your opinion on the "best" way to make payments from outside of Australia into Australia.
These are the methods I have used
credit card sending Australian currency in the post (not the safest) Australian bank transfer (yes non australians can open an Australian bank account) Paypal My interest are on both the buyers and sellers cost and time involved

As I am not a seller, I do not know about payment /transfer of funds from the US to Oz, Bigfella or KLD will know better. However,if you do buy consistently from Oz,having a Bank account here is the way to go.Direct deposits by EFT is fast, easy and hassle free. As for the transfer of funds for payment from Oz to the US, we have both been down that track and experienced the type of problems that can be encountered. After that particular lesson, I now only buy from overseas if the seller "accepts" payment either by Paypal or by a CC. It is also conditional of the seller agreeing to post to "unconfirmed addresses" if payment is made by Paypal. At the end of the day, whichever method you use,you will be slugged by the Banks, financial institutions or payment service providers.

What I have learned is having a bank account in Australia saves alot of bank charges, but I use paypal for international transfers into the account it is not the charges I mind and they are much less than what a bank charges. but it can take up to 10 day for a transfer so I have to keep money in the account for impulse purchases. My next project is to see if I can sell off sopme of my Australian stamps to any of my Aussie mates at 75% of face value so they can use it for posting - they are of no use to me here and have little collectors value. i might even aske Bigfella the same thing and supply him with the stamps to post to me and save postage that way

In my opinion all the fees surrounding international payments deter buyers and sellers of any kind.
Paypal, CC, WU, Cheques and Money orders all have their fees.
Cash is the only one that doesn't but it is also not the best, securiety wise.
Then again if you are a larger style business these fees can be decreased and not seem so bad. I am not in the category so I wouldn't know.

I will add one thing to this conversation. When I was a powerseller on ebay and had my business running well, I did happily accept international buyers. However as the fees got larger and one or two bad experiances I stopped excepting them. I think it is a shame as I enjoyed selling internationally.

Why don't you ask the international buyer to use Paypal with an everyday account (No credit Card)? It is free.
