Would someone please explain the characteristics of a Lincoln Cent Woody which qualify that coin as being a Woody and which characteristics might disqualify the coin from being a Woody? Like certain things the coin might show whereas you can definitely determine if it is or is not a Woody? Does anyone have some pictures of different dates showing these one way or another? Thank you very much.

This is a improper alloy mix that causes a real woody. There Are two different metals mixed in the planchet but not fully mixed, and they toned at a different rate.

These are roller lines, they give the appearence of a woody, but the straight parallel lines are not improperly mixed metal. They are lines from the roller that roll out the metal sheets I believe. I'm not sure which roller or what on the roller causes this.

The older cents show a poor mixture of the copper. When the coin is worn, you can still see the woody affect because the planchet all the way through showing even on worn coin.

On the newer coin you can see rolling lines visible. This is from the metal being rolled out flat. After the BU surface goes away you can see the rolling lines on the coin. But after they wear even a little, they go away.

The woodies do not go away with coin wear as they are through the planchet. On the new coins the rolling lines are only see on the surface of the coin and go away in circulation.
