I found a dime that is copper today.

some dimes that have spent some time in the ground tend to look copper, but we would need pics to tell for sure

It's most likely a victim of the dirt. There's also a thread about a 1979 quarter that was underground.

The shiny areas appears to be polished high points from use.

It has been environmentally toned.
The shiny spots you see is the nickel
showing through where the toning has
worn off from circulation. PMD

Metal detector finds usually. But any coin left outside will turn colors. Carry in you pocket a week with your change and the silver color will come back on the tops of the devices.

It looks to me like your dime has environmental damage. Were it missing clad, weight would be less than normal. Dime weight missing one clad layer = 1.863 g +/- 0.091 g; missing two clad layers = 1.453 g +/- .161 g
