I am starting this topic in order to ask you about coins that I find at my local auctions. When identified as fakes, I'll add them to my fake coin photoset.

First, these. Very dubious seller currently trying to sell only Chinese forgeries, State Quarters and these:

I don't suspect this one, but it's also there..

Fake or not? Please reply.

The first three are all fakes (Quick hint. On these California fractional gold tokens, if it doesn't have a denomination (D, Dol, Doll, or Dollar) it is a fake. Also there are no genuine California fractionals with a bear on the back.)

Can't tell about the fourth one.

All three are tourist pieces, and from what I've read, made in the 1950s or later.
While hard to describe, the obverse portraits are telling too. Portraits on the originals looked more like coins of their day.

I knew it would be easy. But what about the 4th one? Suddenly an original appeared among the fakes?

4th one has genuine details, but most likely a fake since it came from the same seller. Only way to verify is to weigh and check dimensions.

I own several Fractional pieces certified. These are obvious replicas. As stated before, no bear was ever on a fractional. These are collectible tokens.

If the prices were cheap enough it may have been a deal. At coin shows lately all kinds of fakes are being sold as fakes and some bring a decent price pending the quality. One Walker Half was obviously Lead but was selling for $5. From what I've seen lately I'm just wondering when there will be a grading system for fakes, a new Red Book called Price Guide for Counterfeits, Albums to put them in.

I would suggest a name for that guide: The Lead Book: A Guide to Outsourced Coin Replicas.

AAHHHH, and therefore the starting of the counterfeit, fake, replica grading system. GF=Good Fake. NC=Nice Counterfeit. GYWTO=Got You With This One. Naturally each one would have a negative number such as -4GF. If presented in a 2x2, they would have to be folded inside out.

Kurt, you should go ahead and 'squat' on that trademark! You might reap a small reward when (not if) Whitman decides to compile that book!
