Noob question here, but I just wanted to confirm what's going on with the date and stars. Not really my area of expertise.

1882 has a large number of VAMs that are partially or fully doubled dates. The area around the date and stars appears to be a combination of toning and die trails with some doubling on the date itself.

I find that direct lighting can give that impression in photos. It could be doubled, but you may want to post pictures with various lighting directions. I suspect it is the lighting, but that 2 definitely warrants further investigation.

It's what's referred to as pull away toning. During the minting process the metal flow of the planchet through the devices near the rim caused an area between those devices and rim that were impervious to toning. This condition is a pretty good indicator of original surfaces and is not a something that can be replicated in someone's kitchen.

Good information everyone, I'm certain the surfaces are original but it sounds like there isn't actually doubling. Oh well :(

There is likely some doubling of the date digits as most obverse dies are noted to have it albeit very minor. '82-S is actually a boring issue for people who collect by VAM numbers to the extent that a die study has not been completed and probably never will.
To give an idea, '82-s has approximately 36 VAM listings with only two in the SSDC census with double digit population, each just 10, and about half of the listings have a population of zero or 1. I have 4 examples of which none are attributed (yet).
As a collector you have to love '82-S for the stunning examples the Morgan dollar but not for an interesting VAM as there really aren't any.
