Good question. Despite the parallel marks showing that the high points of this coin have been ground down, you could also weigh this coin. I would expect it to be significantly underweight (confirming that material has been removed) after it left the mint.

Another example of trying to create a mint error. So when he fails, what does he do with it? Spends it. Then it shows up here.

Something I just made and thought it was different:
