Hi all, I picked up some Morgans (mostly for Silver investment but I thought it wouldn't hurt to check for VAM's.

The R is partially missing, from what little I know it does no look like a Grease Filled Die or like is was polished away. Was it just damaged ( PSD) or could it be a VAM?

Thanks for your help

That's 79s rev78. Worth more than typical 79s in that grade

I was doing this just the other day, so that is one of the VAM indicators, referred to as a broken R. Only VAM-39 references that attribute as far as I can tell.

Thanks Jadey I'll check it out

Edit

I checked out the die markers and I think you may be right - here are some more images

Let me know what you all think to it being what Jaydey mentioned.

The first picture with the red circle looks like a partial match, but I'm not seeing anything in the other pictures. I think your pictures need to be clearer.

I also just noticed the following statement in VAM 39.

Quote:
Comments:
1. VAM-9, VAM-35, VAM-39, VAM-42 all have a partially broken serif in the R of TRUST. The top portion is missing, but almost all of the shape is visible.
2. Earliest die state without diagonal polishing line in eagle's right wing is 1879-S VAM-35. Later reverse B2g die state with additional thin diagonal polishing line in lower part of eagle's right wing is VAM-34. VAM-34A is an even later die state.

So, there are others with the broken R. You might want to check those.

From what I can tell, the "Engraved Wing Feather" is a reference to the double polish line identified by the red lines in this image. Bottom right image. I can't see that on yours, but your picture is not very clear.
