I've just been shown this coin by a friend. I didn't have my good camera with me: the photos are the best I could manage.

This piece has been in his family for years and he thinks it's gold. It's about 36mm in diameter and feels slightly too light for a gold coin to me. I wonder if it's a silver coin that has been gilded? It's a hammered coin but is much thicker than typical English hammered coins and the one silver hammered Spanish coin that I own: it is almost as thick as a US silver dollar. The edges are fairly smooth and worn with no sign of mould marks. A loop has been soldered onto the coin. There appears to be a date (16xx) under the portrait on the obverse. I've looked at photos of Charles II coins and none seems to match this. I suspect it may be a fantasy piece made for jewellery, but I'd be happy to have other forum members' views. My friend also inherited some quite nice British Victorian silver coins that are definitely genuine and a 1903 British Trade dollar - this was with them, wrapped in tissue paper in a polythene bag!

Thanks everyone for looking at this - it's outside my usual field of knowledge!

Measuring an accurate weight should be the first step.

I know. Unfortunately the coin was shown to me for a brief period in a restaurant, so I had no chance to weigh it. I would say around the same weight as the 1903 British Trade dollar, as I held the coins together to try to gauge it. The Trade dollar weighs 26.95g.

That is a 1694 filippo. Milano's mint, like this one.

If is a filippo, it would be about 27.75g and only were minted with 1694 date on this type. Is not a common coin. the 1676 one is more easy to find, and portrait is similar, the difference is on the shield. Assuming it's not a fake, with that photo is not easy to say:

On observe: CARLOSVS II REX HISPANIARVM (CHARLES II KING OF SPAIN)
On reverse: MEDIOLANI DVX ETC (MILANO'S DUKE ETC) The number of titles was so long they use etcetera even in coins. Thats true!

Regards!

BTW, if it is a filippo, its gilded silver. I don't know any italian-sapnish gold coin with that portrait, sorry for that... and diameter do not match, it should be 42-44 mm (yes, they were BIG coins) :(
