Not so long ago I inherited a bag of old coins,

Our family are interested in the value/significance of these coins.

I have a link to my google drive with high resolution scans of the coins.(The images are too large to attach here)

https://drive.google.com/drive/fold...?usp=sharing

Any information on these coins would be helpful.

Hello and welcome.

Many of your coins are relatively cheap and common - the sort of coins that a coin dealer might toss into a "three for $1 scratch-tray". But there are a few interesting ones that ought to be worth more.

Several of them are silver, and so their value is tied to the price of silver: the two French 50 centimes, the British Guiana fourpence, the British threepence and the South African sixpence and shilling. The British Guiana coin is perhaps the most interesting of those, and worth somewhere in the $50 range - NGC price guide page for this coin.

To identify a few of your "unknowns": on page 1, the silvery scalloped one with King Edward VII is a 1 anna from British India, early 1900s. The coin next to it is a 1 franc from Belgium, 1920s I believe. The two Arabic-language coins are from Egypt during the reign of King Farouk, 5 milliemes 1935 and 10 milliemes 1943. The unknown coins on page 5 are all British. The cartwheel penny with "Replica" stamped on the back is indeed a replica, though I've not seen one with that name stamped on it.

Of the others, a few are interesting. The big 20 decimos copper coin from Argentina I have not seen before; it dates from the years immediately after Argentina's independence, when each Argentinian province issued its own coinage. It's valuable in good condition but unfortunately, this one won't be as valuable since you can't read the date. The Guernsey coin is cheap but this one has quite attractive dark-chocolate toning which might give it some extra value to collectors.

I assume, from the preponderance of southern African coins, and the name "Van Riebeeck" on the cartwheel penny replica, that there was or is a family connection with South Africa? If so, then those coins will probably have much more in sentimental value to the family than they would have in monetary value to a collector.

. 1940 farthing

Hello and !

As there are collectors on this Forum from all over the world, I'll leave some of the coins for others to identify as they will know those areas of numismatics better than me!

Here is my opinion of the following coins:

"British / Ireland / Isle of Man / British Guiana" selection:
Ireland sixpence (nickel)
Isle of Man 5 new pence (cupro-nickel)
Great Britain 3 old pence (nickel-brass)
Great Britain 10 new pence (cupro-nickel)
British Guiana 4 pence (silver)

"France / Spain / Guernsey" selection
Spain 5 centimos (aluminium)
Guernsey 4 doubles 1910H (bronze)
France 10 centimes Napoleon III (bronze)
France 2 francs 3rd Republic (aluminium-bronze)
France 50 centimes 3rd Republic (two - both silver)

"Unknown / Fake" selection:
1854 Great Britain halfpenny (copper)
1916 Great Britain threepence (silver)
1940 Great Britain farthing (bronze)
Replica of 1797 George III cartwheel penny, probably made in South Africa

I can't see anything of great value: the 1854 halfpenny is better than most and a British dealer might charge about £5 for it. The silver coins are all worth at least their metal content. The 1910 Guernsey 4 doubles is actually a very scarce coin (mintage 52,000) but they aren't widely collected so it's catalogued at only about £3 in the condition yours is in. The British Guiana coin is also quite scarce but again they are not widely collected and it's hard to read the date from the photo. The rarest date is 1923 with a mintage of only 12,000.

That Argentina 20 decimos appears to be dated 1827, the most common date for the type. I've seen them sell in the range of $100 in similar condition.

Great job Numisrob, but let me correct you. Spanish one is not 1940 5 cents but 10 cents (word DIEZ on left side of reverse). No value on this state :(

Thanks txabs - should have looked at that one more clearly. Difficult when photos are sideways and you have to enlarge them!

The Van Riebeeck Replika coins (12 in all) were given away in cans of coffee.
