A recent pick-up of mine was this Tetrachalkon from the Kingdom of Cimmerian Bosporos (modern day Crimea). The host coin has a bearded portrait of Pan on one side and a gryphon/lion head with sturgeon below and the inscription ΠAN on the rev. One reason why I chose this coin was for the two countermarks--a 12 pointed star on the obv and a bow in a case on the rev. I learned a ton about these coins and the C/Ms on this 2012 CCF thread, started by @stevex6:

Another reason why I chose this coin was for its long provenance:

Ex Dave Mitten
Ex Don Zauke
Ex CNG
Ex Agora (twice!)

However, I was a little disappointed to find a hand-written notation on one of the note placards that the host coin might have been tooled. The tooling isn't super-obvious to me, but I would welcome your thoughts on this.

Very nice piece.
It would fit rather nicely into my collection as well!
I think the tooling may have been to remove encrustation after in ground burial. If it has been tooled, it was done by a professional. If were my coin, I wouldn't have worried too much about it.

I once had a rather nice gold stater of Rheskuporus 11, but alas, it was sold on consignment in a job lot of ancient coins,
in order to raise the deposit for a mortgage on our first house.

That was waaaaay back in 1976. I paid the mortgage off 7 years later, on a single income.
At least, the house proved to be an excellent investment.

I have been looking for another nice Bosporan gold stater for a reasonable price, ever since.

Nice addition, Dave. I've seen the same combination of obverse and reverse countermarks belore...some examples below. The obverse wheel was, it seems, typically applied in the same relative spot for the Princess Leia look:

Thanks Ron, Sel, and Bob for your kind words. I'm really learning quite a bit as I am digging deeper into these Greek coins!

With regard to the C/M, in the thread by @stevex6 that I referenced, there is an interesting comment from @dougsmit that Frank Robinson was selling pairs of these from a hoard back in the old days. Evidently the starburst/wheel countermark was built into the die at some point and that accounts for the consistency in their location. As a counter-supposition, I suppose that time travelers could have brought back images from StarWars back to the 300s BC as inspiration for Pan's new hairstyle.

No need for time traveling. The very first words of Star Wars: "A long time ago..."
