Everything I always heard was don't clean your coins. When I first started I tried cleaning some junk coins using some of the other techniques shown and then put the olive oil on top and it made them shine. They looked great for a couple hours. Since then only used a little dish soap and water. It gets the dirt with junk off, there's still something I could use a little bit more of something.
I've read a few posts that say to use acetone. Is this wise? How do you do it so you don't damage the coin? If it's a penny would it not make it tone? Or would it only do that if the dye was bad? Wouldn't it eat the finishing off the coin?

I have a 1992 possible CAM and I sure don't want to destroy it. It's just hard to tell for sure because either possible dirt that won't come off or just discoloration.

4 craps and giggles let's say it is a CAM. Say it's AU 58. I think it's better than that but let's just say. It's a good strike. Around about how much do you think it would be worth? Would it be worth trying acetone or would I be throwing away a couple hundred dollars or more?

Thanks

Acetone does not harm coins at all. Also, the 1992 D CAM is very rare. I hope it is, but likelihood is that it is not.

to CCF. As a general rule, don't clean coins. Acetone is fine, use search box upper left of page. Post some pics of your coin. As to values, check ebay sold values for an idea.

If the coin was valuable, I leave them alone. I used to use olive oil years ago, but it is organic and can rot. So I use mineral oil to loosen/remove gunk off circulated coin. Never try to alter BU coins or Proof coins. (the quickest way to ruin them) A coin turned pink is always a sure sign it was altered. Most serious collectors would not buy a cleaned coin. So rather than lower the grade, I seldom even use mineral oil. Best advise, don't clean them. At least you won't do something you would regret later. If it coin looks bad enough that you want to alter them, I toss them back into circulation. Acetone does not remove stains on coins. Take a picture before and after and you will see if it changes the coins or not. (in a good way, or in a bad way) Let coin thoroughly dry. Putting a wet coin into a 2X2 could turn a cent green.

If you had a real 1992 CAM send it to NGC Conservation. They've done well for me, others have had different experiences

I've seen conserved coins. They still look cleaned/altered:

Note how they look like the top layer of the coin missing, the green spots are still visible. Best to leave a valuable coin alone. If you are considering buying one, pass. Life is too short to by bad wine coins.

I wonder if NCS used electrolysis on it. That would remove a thin layer of metal wouldn't it?

Prehaps, honestly I prefer the after image in that comparison. It has more eye appeal and doesn't look cleaned. I doubt electrolysis. More likly they try to remove contaminates on the "skin" of the coins and end up taking off a bit of it
