This raw beauty sold last night for a mere $275. I was going to pull the trigger pretty high, somewhere in the mid-$500 range, but I had some concerns that there were some scratches to the left of liberty's head and the coin had a whizzed look to it, so I didn't pull the trigger. I was concerned that this was a breakout of a slabbed coin in a details holder. Seems like some of the other watchers of the auction had similar concerns as the coin wasn't bid up much. Nevertheless, it is still a beautiful coin imho.

Thoughts on grade and problems? Thanks!

The long scratch along the lap of liberty is due to a die scratch that was well known in this particular obverse die. It is raised and wnhances the value of the coin because this makes it a well-known and very scarce variety.

@NumismaticStudent, what about that field friction to the front of liberty's face?

I like the coin. For that price, do you really expect perfection?

I have a very similar coin, with the same obverse die crack. The mintmark on mine always seemed softly struck and I see the same quality on the posted coin. Mine is graded PCGS AU-55 which would seem fair for this one. The field marks look like scratches from mishandling but don't seem severe enough to cause a details grade.
I suspect the buyer will be happy with their purchase.

How noticable is the friction?
