I really am having a hard time deciding if this 1957 half crown is AU or BU. What do you guys think? Any input would be appreciated.

I don't know these really well, but I think you are just looking at a weak strike. I think I see rub on her cheek and in the middle of her hair at the third and fourth leaf, but I would think with that much wear in that location, you'd see considerable wear on the obverse as well. I really don't see rub on the obverse....

I don't know the value, but regardless, that is a nice looking coin whatever the grade.

Hello Archraz,

This coin has nice detail but I'm not seeing any luster. The color looks dull and uniformly grey. I just checked Wikipedia and they report the composition is cupro-nickel so I would not expect it to be as shiny as a silver coin, but even a US nickel has more luster than this coin when uncirculated.

I see what looks like wear at the top of Elizabeth's head, on her shoulder, and on the laurel wreath. I'm guessing this is an AU coin with luster impaired by some kind of cleaning or dipping.

Wikipedia says they made more than 30 million of these, so I expect you can find a true BU example without too much trouble.

Is this yours? If an auction, I might give some leeway and think the photo simply hides the luster. It has been known to happen.
Then again, it's not a great photo to suggest "BU", especially since I note small marks on the effigy and in the surrounding field.
Personally, I'm not seeing evidence of a weak strike in the reverse shield, and small details are inconclusive but suggest AU to my eyes.

Jaobler & KurtS - yes this is my coin, but it does have quite a bit of luster in real life. (My scanner tends to make coins look worse than they really are). I know that the bust looks a tad weak around the face and the 4th leaf. But what confuses me is how there appears to be no wear on the shield.
