So how would you grade this? My scanner has made it look a bit lighter than it is in real life. I sort of wonder if it had been cleaned long ago and has retoned. Any input would be appreciated!

I'd say VF20. Cleaned?

vermontensium- yeah I was thinking about a VF too. The reason why I think that it may have been cleaned is that in real life it is lighter and has a sort of semi-odd looking luster to it. In essence, it just doesn't have that dull gray that one would typically expect on a VF.

G'day,
G'day, I'd rate the obverse a full grade better than the reverse. You can still see a lot of detail in H.M.'s hair, and around his eye. Although the high points are worn, all design elements are evident.
The reverse contains most elements in outline only.
I wouldn't necessarily conclude that this has been cleaned.
Apart from even wear, the coin has no significant dings.
It is very uncommon to find a coin of this era in better condition, and plenty of examples are more worn &/or more dinged.
I'd put it between Fine and VF: say, Fine+.
Please satisfy my curiosity: what inscription is there on the edge: "primo" or "secundo" ?
I put together a year-set of 1820, and I had to pay a lot to get a crown as good as this.

Peter THOMAS- It says "Secundo" on the edge. Wow, I'm starting to think that I got quite a deal on this coin.

Yes, I also noticed how nicer the obverse looks--do strike issues come into play?

I hope this doesn't come off as wrong, but why does George III's effigy so resemble Nero? Clearly they're going after an Imperial Roman style, but the particular resemblance is uncanny, and I'm sure there's a better explanation than mine.

KurtS- very good point about the portrait looking like Nero. Honestly the paintings of George the IIII that I have seen don't really even look that much like the bust on the coin. So this is an intriguing question.

And when it comes to the wear on the St Michael design, it seems to me that this image wore rather badly just due to how it was designed. I'm basing this on the fact that I have a few crowns from the 1890s that are also VFs and the amount of wear on this design looks pretty uniform.
