Yep a die crack. With that placement we call it a spike head. More collectable type.

I can't tell for sure from the photos, but the crack may surround either a die chip or RIDB. If it is a break and is large enough to be a RIDB, it might be the first on a Roosevelt. It might be worth a second look and some clearer photos. |

It does look like a Retained Interior Die Break in the second photo.

Interesting coin. After seeing the new photos, I'm not as sure this is an IDB. It might, however, be a Retained Cud (RCD), which now is being called a Pre-Cud. Here are the first and third photos that you just uploaded, enhanced a bit and cropped in the case of the first photo. I have marked portions of the cracks with red arrows.   I see two things with the U-shaped die crack. First, it connects twice to the rim. Second, the crack appears to be complete. I cannot tell from the photos whether there is movement (displacement) of the portion within the crack. The second crack is interesting. It is as bold as the right side of the U-shaped crack. I cannot tell from your photos where it starts. It would be helpful if you could take whole-coin photos with a cell phone or camera, and upload those. Seeing the entire obverse and reverse in a photo would help. I think you have something interesting here. There are quite a few people on this message board who have many years of experience and who likely will weigh in. Having the two whole-coin photos would be a big step in finding out what you have. |

I am adding two pictures I took with my phone unfortunately this is the best I can do with photos. It looks like Roosevelt ha a fractured skull.   |

Thank you for posting the new whole coin photos. They are much clearer. Your die break is interesting. I just don't know if the break quite makes it to Retained Cud status. Compare your coin to RCD-10c-2017P-01. There, the die break clearly includes the rim both times. Your coin's break seems to include the rim on the south (lower) leg of the break, but I just can't tell on the upper (north) leg. On the other hand, the connecting crack is impressive. It traces all the way to Roosevelt's eye. Let's see what others think in light of the new photos. Regardless, you found a keeper! |
